Moving is the worst kind of cleaning. The home is empty, every corner is suddenly visible, the previous tenant's dust is now your problem, and you're running on three hours of sleep and a pickup truck full of furniture. We've done a lot of these — for renters near Seymour Johnson, for first-time homebuyers in Mount Olive, for retirees downsizing into Goldsboro. Here's the checklist we work through on every move-in/move-out clean.
Move-out checklist (the deposit-return version)
If you're moving out and want your security deposit back, work this list in order. Top to bottom, back to front — gravity is your friend.
Kitchen
- Empty all cabinets and drawers. Wipe interiors with a damp microfiber.
- Inside the oven (including racks and door glass).
- Inside the refrigerator and freezer (defrost if needed, wipe seals and drip tray).
- Inside the dishwasher (rinse the filter; wipe the door seal).
- Microwave inside and out, including the vent filter.
- Stovetop, including under burners and around control knobs.
- Sink, faucet, and disposal (run with ice + lemon to deodorize).
- All counters and backsplashes.
- Floor — sweep, then mop with a degreasing solution.
Bathrooms
- Inside cabinets and drawers.
- Toilet (bowl, tank, base, behind).
- Shower or tub, including grout and door tracks.
- Sink and faucet, including overflow holes.
- Mirror and any mounted fixtures.
- Exhaust fan vent cover.
- Floor — sweep, then mop.
Bedrooms and living areas
- Inside closets (corners, top shelves, closet rods).
- Window sills, tracks, and blinds.
- Baseboards, door frames, doors themselves.
- Light fixtures, ceiling fan blades, switch plates.
- HVAC vents — interior of grates where reachable.
- Floors — sweep/vacuum, then mop hard surfaces.
Everywhere
- Walls — spot-clean obvious marks, scuffs, fingerprints.
- Patch any nail holes if your lease requires it (white toothpaste in a pinch).
- Replace burned-out lightbulbs.
- Sweep porch, patio, and entry steps.
- Take all trash to the curb, not the inside bin.
Move-in checklist (welcoming the new home)
Move-in cleaning is a different problem. The previous tenant's 'cleaning' is rarely what you'd call a clean. Plus, the place has been empty long enough for a layer of dust to settle on every visible surface. Hit it before you unpack.
Before you unpack
- Wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer (you do not know who lived there before, or what they left behind).
- Disinfect every doorknob, light switch, faucet handle, and toilet handle.
- Run a hot, empty cycle in the dishwasher with vinegar.
- Run the washing machine empty with hot water and a cup of bleach.
- Replace the HVAC filter immediately. No exceptions.
- Vacuum or steam any carpets in bedrooms (you'll be sleeping on them tomorrow).
- Wipe down all kitchen surfaces, even if they look clean.
Day-one priorities
- Bathrooms — full surface clean before any toiletries come in.
- Kitchen counters and inside cabinets — before any food or dishes go in.
- Master bedroom — before the bed gets assembled.
- Living room — at least one clean surface so you can set boxes down.
Everything else can wait until tomorrow. Sleep on a clean bed in a clean bedroom in a freshly-filtered home; the rest will sort itself in the next week.
Getting the deposit back: tips that actually work
- Take photos of every room after cleaning, with date stamps. Email them to yourself so there's a server-side timestamp.
- Be there when the landlord walks through. Most disputes get resolved on the spot when you're holding the cleaning list.
- Hand the cleaning checklist to the landlord. Most won't read it carefully, but it sets the tone — you took it seriously.
- If you used a professional cleaner, ask for an itemized invoice and keep a copy. It carries weight in any dispute.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a move-out clean take?
A standard 1,200–2,000 sqft Wayne County rental takes 5–8 hours. Larger homes or particularly heavy condition can run into a second day. We'll quote a firm time on the call.
Will a Simply Polished move-out actually get me my deposit back?
We can't guarantee a landlord's decision, but we can tell you we've never had a client lose their deposit over cleanliness when we did the move-out. We work to the standard a landlord with a deposit at stake would inspect for.
Can you fit me in this week?
Often yes. Move-outs are time-sensitive and we keep some flexibility in our schedule for them. Send us the form with your move date and we'll get back fast.
Do you clean empty appliances?
Yes — that's a big part of move-in / move-out. Empty ovens, fridges (including the freezer), dishwashers, and microwaves all get done. Empty cabinets get wiped inside.
What if I don't have time to schedule before the keys go back?
Call us anyway. We've done same-day move-outs more than once. We can't always make it happen, but we'll tell you straight away whether we can.
